How to Calculate In-Hand Salary from CTC in India
Cost to Company (CTC) is the employer's total annual cost for an employee. It is not always the amount credited to your bank account. In-hand salary is the amount paid after applicable employee deductions and payroll adjustments.
CTC vs gross salary vs take-home pay
- CTC: May include fixed pay, employer contributions, insurance, bonus and variable benefits.
- Gross salary: Salary before employee-side deductions and tax withholding, as defined by the pay structure.
- In-hand salary: The net amount paid after applicable deductions such as employee PF, professional tax where applicable, TDS and other payroll items.
How to estimate monthly take-home pay
- Check the detailed annual salary breakup in your offer letter.
- Separate fixed monthly salary from annual bonus, variable pay and non-cash benefits.
- Identify employee PF and other payroll deductions shown in the salary structure.
- Estimate tax withholding based on the applicable financial year, tax regime and declarations.
- Convert annual amounts to monthly amounts only where they are paid evenly through the year.
Illustrative example
| Item | Illustration |
|---|---|
| Annual CTC | ₹6,00,000 |
| Monthly CTC equivalent | ₹50,000 |
| Employer benefits/contributions included | Depends on offer structure |
| Employee deductions and tax | Depend on eligibility and applicable rules |
| Final in-hand pay | Calculate from actual salary breakup |
There is no single take-home figure for every ₹6 lakh CTC offer: employers may structure compensation differently, and deductions vary.
Why your payslip may differ
PF treatment, state-specific professional tax, insurance, reimbursements, variable pay and income-tax withholding can affect your monthly credit. Use your payslip and official tax guidance for the final figure.
