EMI Calculator Guide: How Loan EMI Works in India
Learn how loan EMI is calculated in India, what affects your monthly payment, and how to compare total interest before taking a loan.
What is EMI?
EMI means Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the scheduled monthly payment used to repay a loan over a selected tenure. An EMI generally contains both interest and principal.
How is EMI calculated?
For a standard reducing-balance loan, EMI can be estimated using the principal, monthly interest rate and number of monthly payments. The formula is:
EMI = P × r × (1+r)n ÷ ((1+r)n − 1)
Here, P is the loan principal, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the total number of monthly instalments. If the interest rate is zero, EMI is simply principal divided by the number of payments.
What changes your EMI?
- Higher loan amount: usually increases EMI.
- Higher interest rate: increases the interest component and usually the EMI.
- Longer tenure: can reduce monthly EMI but may increase total interest.
- Prepayments: can reduce outstanding principal and future interest, subject to lender terms.
EMI vs total repayment
A low EMI does not automatically mean a cheaper loan. Always compare the total amount repaid and total interest along with the monthly payment.
